Read
the section on choosing your nonprofit. This section
contains descriptions of 10 sample nonprofits. These nonprofits
aren’t real, but they’re very similar to real organizations.
They give students a sense of what a real nonprofit might be
like.

Choose
the nonprofits that you’d like to support. Which
nonprofits best match each studdent's interests? Which ones work
to achieve goals that the student cares about? Instruct students
to select up to five of the nonprofits from the 10 samples. One
nonprofit is fine, but students can choose up as many as five.
They may wish to print the descriptions of these nonprofits,
too. |

Complete
the total giving worksheet. This
worksheet lists the total amount students have to give in donations.
Have class members use their spending plans to determine amounts.
Instruct students to enter both monetary and volunteer time amounts.
The worksheet will calculate yearly totals automatically. |

Complete
the nonprofit contributions worksheet. This worksheet
lists the amount students plan to give to each organization.
In the first column, each nonprofit name should be listed. Then
have students list the amount of money and volunteer time they’d
like to give to that nonprofit. The worksheet will calculate
totals automatically. Make sure students’ totals match
the amounts from their total giving worksheets! |

Prepare for the future. This
practice was just an exercise, but it helped students gain important
skills. If they were to donate to real nonprofits, they’d follow
the same process as they did here. They’ve done it once—now
they know how. They’ll be ready when it’s time to contribute. |
