Instructions for teachers: Family giving

This section of the Web site discusses family finances and family giving. If you are assisting families with this section, instruct them to read each section in order. As they go, instruct them to take these steps:

Family profile for children
Family profile for parents and caregivers
Take your family profile. These profiles are helpful for understanding children’s and parents’ views. The profiles should be taken individually. Complete them alone first before sharing your answers. Children should complete the family profile for children, and parents and caregivers should complete the family profile for parents and caregivers.
Discuss your results. Before planning your finances together, it’s helpful to know where you stand. Talk over your profiles as a family. How different were your responses?
Create a family spending plan. Together with your family, complete the monthly income section first. Include income from all sources. Then complete the monthly expenses section.
Compare your totals. What does the family spending plan tell you? If necessary, make adjustments to your plan. Ideally, your income should be greater than your expenses.
Personal giving values worksheet
Family giving values worksheet
Determine your giving values. This exercise will help you understand how to contribute as a family. First, complete the personal giving values worksheet. Follow the directions included on the worksheet. Then complete the family giving values worksheet. Follow the directions included on that worksheet as well.
Choose your nonprofits that you’d like to support. Which nonprofits best match your values? Choose up to five nonprofits to support as a family.
Total giving worksheet
Complete the total giving worksheet. This worksheet lists the total amount your family has to give in donations. Use your spending plan to determine amounts. Enter the amount your family plans to give in monthly donations. Then enter the amount of time family members plan to volunteer each month. The worksheet will calculate yearly totals for you.
Nonprofit contributions worksheet
Complete the nonprofit contributions worksheet. This worksheet lists the amount your family plans to give to each organization. In the first column, list each nonprofit name. Then list the amount of money and volunteer time you’d like to give to that nonprofit. The worksheet will calculate totals for you. Make sure your totals match the amounts from your total giving worksheet!
Congratulate yourselves on your success! You’ve just made some important decisions together as a family. Now you’ll be prepared to donate to real nonprofits when you’re ready.
