Supporting your community

This section of the Web site contains four parts. Read each section in order.

In the section on making a contribution, you’ll have a chance to practice giving to an imaginary nonprofit. This practice will help you prepare to give to actual nonprofits when you’re ready.

To practice making a contribution, complete these steps:

Read the section on choosing your nonprofit. This section contains descriptions of 10 sample nonprofits. These nonprofits aren’t real, but they’re very similar to real organizations. They give you a sense of what a real nonprofit might be like.
> Choosing your nonprofit
Choose the nonprofits that you’d like to support. Which nonprofits best match your interests? Which ones work to achieve goals that you care about? Select up to five of the nonprofits from the 10 samples. One nonprofit is fine, but you can choose up to five if you like. You may wish to print the descriptions of these nonprofits, too.
Total giving worksheet
Complete the total giving worksheet. This worksheet lists the total amount you have to give in donations. Use your spending plan to determine amounts. Enter the amount you plan to give in monthly donations. Then enter the amount of time you plan to volunteer each month. The worksheet will calculate yearly totals for you.
Nonprofit contributions worksheet
Complete the nonprofit contributions worksheet. This worksheet lists the amount you plan to give to each organization. In the first column, list each nonprofit name. Then list the amount of money and volunteer time you’d like to give to that nonprofit. The worksheet will calculate totals for you. Make sure your totals match the amounts from your total giving worksheet.
Prepare for the future. This practice was just an exercise, but it helped you gain important skills. If you were to donate to real nonprofits, you’d follow the same process as you did here. You’ve done it once—now you know how. You’ll be ready when it ’s time to contribute.
