Instructions for parents: Supporting your community

This section of the Web site contains four parts. Your child should read each section in order.

In the section on making a contribution, students will have a chance to practice giving to an imaginary nonprofit. This practice will help them prepare to give to actual nonprofits when they’re ready.

To practice making a contribution, your child should complete the following steps. You may wish to work with him or her to help your child learn these important concepts.

Read the section on choosing your nonprofit. This section contains descriptions of 10 sample nonprofits. These nonprofits aren’t real, but they’re very similar to real organizations. They give your child a sense of what a real nonprofit might be like.
> Choosing your nonprofit
Choose the nonprofits that you’d like to support. Which nonprofits best match your child’s interests? Which ones work to achieve goals that your child cares about? Help your child select up to five of the nonprofits from the 10 samples. One nonprofit is fine, but students can choose as many as five. They may wish to print the descriptions of these nonprofits, too.
Total giving worksheet
Complete the total giving worksheet. This worksheet lists the total amount that your child has to give in donations. Help your child use his or her spending plan to determine amounts. Students should enter both monetary and volunteer time amounts. The worksheet will calculate yearly totals automatically.
Nonprofit contributions worksheet
Complete the nonprofit contributions worksheet. This worksheet lists the amount students plan to give to each organization. In the first column, each nonprofit name should be listed. Then help your child list the amount of money and volunteer time they’d like to give to that nonprofit. The worksheet will calculate totals automatically. Make sure your child’s totals match the amounts from his or her total giving worksheet.
Prepare for the future. This practice is just an exercise, but it helps students gain important skills. When they donate to real nonprofits, they’ll follow the same process as they did here. They’ve done it once—now they know how. They’ll be ready when it’s time to contribute for real.
