Instructions for parents: Running a nonprofit

This section of the Web site discusses nonprofits and nonprofit management. Children should read each section in order.

First, children will learn the basics of how nonprofits are run. Next, they’ll have the chance to practice running one. In the section on planning a budget, have students take these steps:

Follow these links to the answer keys for each organization. Check your children's budgets and explain corrections as necessary.
Animal rights organization
Anti-crime organization
Human rights organization
Environmental protection organization
Choose a nonprofit to work with. There are four sample nonprofits in this section. These nonprofits don’t really exist. However, they’re based on real organizations. Children should choose the nonprofit that seems most interesting to them. Which one would they prefer to run?
Review the nonprofit’s description. Children may wish to print this description for reference. In this step, they’ll learn the details of their organization. Instruct children to pay close attention to the budget explanation. They’ll need these figures to complete the budget worksheets.

Budget worksheets
Complete the budget worksheets. First, have children complete the revenue worksheet for their organization. They may have to use their math skills in this section. Some figures will need to be calculated. Have children include revenue that their nonprofit receives from all sources. Then, instruct them to complete the expenses worksheet. Expenses should be included based on the nonprofit description.
Compare revenue and expenses. Now it’s time to see if your children's budgets balance. Have your children look at their revenue totals. Compare these to their total expenses. These totals should be the same. If they aren’t, assist your children in recalculating their worksheets.
